What do we mean matcha prices have tripled?

As I am sure many of you have seen, matcha has gone crazy, on TikTok, in cafes, on your hot girl walks or in your pantry aisle. You can get strawberry matchas, iced matchas, brown-sugar, cold foam, fancy matchas, the works. This matcha trend has skyrocketed across social media. 

But with an increase in popularity comes an increase in demand, worldwide! In the last 12 months, matcha demand has skyrocketed yet the green tea leaves have not grown any faster. In 2024, Japan's green tea exports, including matcha, rose 25% by value to 36.4 billion yen!

So while our purchasing team were placing our next order of certified organic, premium Japanese matcha, we discovered the prices from the farmers have tripled! 

Matcha 101

Matcha is a stone-ground powder from specially processed green tea leaves. It is traditionally whisked with hot water and enjoyed for a balanced energy and calming effect. It contains less caffeine than coffee and can provide a more sustained energy boost, minus the crash that coffee can often bring.

Matcha green tea is different from straight green tea as matcha plants are shaded from direct sunlight for several weeks before harvest, boosting the chlorophyll content, giving matcha its vibrant green hue and enhancing its flavour profile. Matcha can contain up to 140 times more antioxidants compared to regular brewed green tea. It’s packed with vitamins A, B-complex, C & K and can help protect cells from free radical damage. 

Current state of the matcha industry

Planet Organic sources premium Japanese, certified organic matcha however, in recent months, our matcha has become more and more difficult to source. This surge in popularity has put a strain on Japanese green tea farmers and the Japanese government, leading to a surge in supply prices.

Additionally, there are now significantly longer wait times to receive matcha. Particularly with certified organic matcha, there’s no magic chemical we can add to the plant to make it grow quicker or produce more volume. Instead, we must patiently wait for these antioxidant-filled green tea leaves to grow at their natural pace.

Some businesses may choose to add fillers, sweeteners or additives into their matcha blends, to keep their price cheaper for customers. But it's important to pay close attention to the ingredient list. Often, matcha will be at the very bottom of the ingredient list with only 7% to 10% matcha per packet.

What is Planet Organic’s matcha plan? Thanks for asking! We have ordered another 2 tonnes of certified organic Japanese matcha, which should arrive by November.
